Welsh Pibgorn

The pibgorn I make are styled after the examples in St Fagans though they are not exact copies. The St Fagans pibgyrn appear to be tuned in an open pipe scale with only the fifth and eighth in exact tune with the six finger note, other notes being intermediate. They would originally have had reeds made from elder which is much less stable than reed cane. As such they would have been very much a solo instrument.

My `standard’ pibgorn is in D, with modern tuning so that they can be played with other instruments, or together playing harmony parts. With fully open fingering, the basic scale is:

D   E   F#   G   A   B   C   C#   D

Their tone can vary quite a lot depending on the wood used for the body, the shape of the cowhorn bell and its reed. Harder woods tend to give a louder, harsher instrument.
